Mother, merchant, community health worker: a day with Tina Mboyo treating people for river blindness
Tina Mboyo splits her days between taking care of her children, selling beans at the market and distributing medicine as a community health worker in her community in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Community health workers are often volunteers, so they have many competing demands for their time. But, their work is essential to completing mass drug administrations for neglected tropical diseases. Millions of people receive medicine for NTDs in the the DRC every year because of the work of people like Tina. This medicine helps prevent the devastating effects of NTDs like blindness, disfigurement and even death.
