Lymphatic filariasis on the brink of elimination: Stories from coastal Kenya
Lamu county has effectively halted transmission of lymphatic filariasis, a debilitating disease that causes irreversible swelling of the legs, and in men, painful swelling of the scrotum. For some men the scrotum can grow to the size and weight of a bowling ball. Now, the effort has shifted from providing preventative treatment to finding and giving care to those still living with the lifelong debilitating effects of the disease. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the community, this achievement has changed the lives of many, offering hope for those affected.
